Bio

 Jieun Byeon is a third-year Ph.D. student in Political Science at the University of South Carolina. Her research focuses on the dynamics within intrastate wars, with a particular emphasis on third-party interventions. This includes the strategic decision-making processes that influence the duration and outcomes of civil conflicts, the role of major regional powers as third-party sponsors, and the ways in which global media framing shapes external interventions. Methodologically, she is interested in using supervised machine learning to categorize natural language texts and build original datasets, which she combines with advanced statistical modeling to study the interaction between external interventions and conflict dynamics. She received her M.A. in Political Science from National Taiwan University (Taiwan), and holds a B.B.A. in Business Administration and a B.A. in Chinese Culture from Sogang University (South Korea).
