Nuclear, Astro and Particle Physics Seminars

These lectures feature speakers from around the country and globe. Each seminar lasts about an hour and takes a closer look at more specialized fields in various realms of physics and astronomy.

Many seminars will be held in a hybrid format and a recurring Zoom link is provided to access the virtual format.

The talks will be on Wednesdays at 4PM in the Rogers Room (Jones PSC 409).

Upcoming Seminar (Fall 2026):

Muon collider and its relevant R&D at the SNS

Speaker: Dr. Vasiliy Morozov
Affiliation: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Date:
November 11

Abstract:

There has been renewed interest within the accelerator community worldwide in a muon collider as both a Higgs factory and an energy-frontier discovery machine. A muon collider is an exciting and highly complex concept that presents a number of novel technical challenges which must be overcome to make such a facility feasible. This talk will examine those challenges from the perspective of an accelerator physicist. I will discuss the basic principles of muon collider design, its major technical components, and the associated issues, including muon beam production, cooling, acceleration, and collisions. I will conclude with the SNS perspective, highlighting how current and potential future R&D could help address some of these challenges.
